Grèce (Groupe B de la FIFA) Analyse de l'équipe

The last time when they were widely regarded and laughed at as “Dark Horses”, the Greeks came out of nowhere and clinched UEFA EURO 2004 cup. And this FIFA World Cup 2010, they seemed to again being called the dark horses. Placed at 12th position in the FIFA World Rankings, the Greeks have managed to qualify the second time for the FIFA world cup, the first being for USA 1994 where they were thrashed by Bulgaria, Nigeria and Argentina.

Fate has it, that the two teams (Argentina and Nigeria) which stamped losses on the faces of the Greeks are now member of Group B and the Grecians will have to face them first. Now isn’t this going to make the football match interesting enough and thus sell tickets?

Grecians started their qualifier matches with successive victories over Luxembourg, Latvia and Moldova only then next to loose to Switzerland. The Swiss bounced back again after defeating Israel and then defeating Greece in further rounds. The decisive goal by famous striker Dimitrios Salpingidis over Ukraine helped the Greeks to qualify for FIFA South Africa 2010.

Coach Otto Rehhagel famously known as King Otto is tipped of having finally made some sense out of the Greece National Football team. His last 3 years stint as coach has helped the Greeks win EURO 2004 and managed a decent show at the qualifiers this World Cup.

Defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has enough experience playing football matches for swanky rich European clubs. Striker Angelos Charisteas is famous for his strikes to win EURO 2004 while Theofanis Gekas 10 goal streak is thanks to which they qualified for South Africa 2010. Both Charisteas and Gekas are currently the two highest goal scorers in the team.

Georgios Samaras is the new shining beacon of hope and tipped to be a striker to watch you for. My bet and favorite in the team is a player whose consistency has been undermined: Sotirios Kyrgiakos. He was the first Greek player to be signed by the filthy rich Liverpool Premier Club and has 50 caps and 4 goals to his name. Though he missed all the action in Euro 2004 victory because of a knee injury, he jumped back and scored 3 crucial goals in EURO 2008 qualifiers.

However Greece and King Otto have certain players to be worried about. Kostas Katsouranis and Giorgios Karagounis are two players who despite having tremendous experience have started to show a drop in their performance. I just hope he keeps the experienced strikers to ensure the goal tally goes up to give stiff competition to the Argentines and Nigerians. Lets see what happens to Grecians at FIFA 2010
